Heather Lawson, a seventh grade challenge social studies teacher at DMS, was named as the Dalton Public Schools’ 2009 Tom Jones Educator of the Year. She was quite shocked to have been chosen among all of her colleagues. Mrs. Lawson exclaimed, “I was honored that my older students voted for me.” She revealed that she never really expected the award, not even in her dreams. Mrs. Lawson was touched that she was even nominated.

The Dalton Education Foundation, in an interview with the Dalton Daily Citizen, stated that Mrs. Lawson is the 23rd Dalton Public School educator to receive the Tom Jones Award. The award began in 1987 to recognize Thomas R. Jones, an entrepreneur, civic community leader and chairman of the Dalton Board of Education for 22 of the 26 years he served on the board.

Mrs. Lawson later commented, “All students are different and should be allowed to have a democratic education where their differences are appreciated.” She believes that everyone is capable of learning.

Mrs. Lawson noted that students should not find social studies boring. Try to find something that you are interested in. Her favorite part of teaching is being able to interact with students and discovering the way each student learns. Mrs. Lawson wants to thank all of her students, from the present and past for being who they are! She adds, “Never be afraid to learn from a new and different way!”

DMS would like to congratulate Mrs. Lawson and thank her for all she does here at DMS!

Cougars Collecting For Haiti

Mr. Fearing, 6th grade earth science teacher, lead the Cougar fundraising effort for Haiti. Caring Cougars filled the water jugs with money to help with relief for the Haitian people. Over $1200 was collected. Donations were sent to clintonbushhaitifund.org. Be on the lookout for red-haired teachers at DMS.
